Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, Demis Hassabis, and Mustafa Suleyman don't agree on much. But apparently the prospect of someone using their products to engineer a pandemic is enough to get the whole gang signing the same piece of paper. The CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Microsoft AI have co-signed a public letter urging Congress to mandate customer and order screening for companies selling synthetic DNA and RNA. The ask: make it legally required, not just a polite suggestion, that gene synthesis vendors actually verify who they're selling to and what those sequences could be used for.
